Getting Publicity on Radio for Your Charity Event

Many of the same principles, strategies, and techniques you’d use for TV apply to radio.

But radio, according to Sonny Melendrez, is “theater of the mind.”

Whereas TV creates pictures with videotape, radio creates pictures with words.

“Suppose you’re promoting a spaghetti dinner,” Sonny says. “By itself—not very exciting. So get creative. Go to the Internet. Look up the history of spaghetti. Talk about how it was really spaghetti—not turkey—that the Pilgrims served at the first Thanksgiving.”

You can also talk about different ways spaghetti can be cooked—ways you never thought of.

Always be aware of the tone of the show and the personality of the host. Some will let you “get away” with more than others. Also keep in mind the news of the day. If something grim has happened recently, it will be less appropriate to get wild and crazy.

But have fun--just make sure you don’t have so much fun that you forget to mention (several times) date, time, location, and cause.
